Boat Ride 10/6

Boat Ride 10/6

R arranged for us to take a sun rise boat ride on the Ganga. We had a Hindi guide that was quite fluent in English. It was good to hear from a Hindu about the different areas along the river known as the ghats. Ghats are steps leading down to the rivers edge, the Ganga or Mother Ganga as they call it.  There are several ghats that have holy significance to them.  The most holy is the burning ghat. If you die in this city and are cremated & you ashes are pushed into this river you are released from the cycle of reincarnation and go straight to heaven.  But your family has to also purchase the holy flame to start the fire because if you use a regular match it doesn't count  Many people in their old age will come to this city and wait to die so that they can be released from being reborn. There are 5 types of people who do not get cremated, instead their bodies are weight and sank in the river.  A child is considered holy, to young to have sin, a pregnant woman because of the child, a holy man, a leper and a snake bitten person.  The last 2 they do not cremate because it may release the poison in to the air.   They really have no hope in this belief system because if you haven't been good enough and pleased  the gods you could be reborn as anything.  they also believe if you bathe in the river it washes away your sin. The very sad part is they must do this dIly as it not permanent forgiveness of sins

How blessed we are to have a true and living God that cares enough for us that He would provide a way for our sins to be forgiven once and for all through Jesus Christ.

Cantonement Center 10/4

Cantonment Center 10/4

Today at the center was a free day. During the morning we played for a long time with the kids. They love just playing and being free to be a kid, not having to work the trains or scavenge for items they can sell to the recyclers.

They thought it so funny to see us adults jumping rope..or atleast trying to! R and his coworkers are great with the children. They have taught the children several songs in Hindi that we teach our kids in Sunday School. It is so cool to hear these song in another language. R is following a teaching curriculum for bible and discipleship.

We had the opprotunity to go in small groups to see the station & where the kids live. In the after noon Robert, Anne and I were guided to the station by 2 of the oldest girls at the center.  The younger of the two took my hand and held on to it the whole time we walked. The first stop we made was at a group of people sitting on the sidewalk. The older Jumni, our guide kept pointing and we finally worked out that it was Suraja's home. Next she took us to a tree with a woman and baby sitting under the tree. We we understood that this was her mother and where she lived.  We saw nothing that even looked like the crude shelters we have become familiar with, there were a few drainage pipes to the left...  The girls then took us through another section of the area around the station. We saw where many of the other children live and met a few "mam's". It was very similar to the RN slum area. The kids were happy we came to visit.

Aghoria Baba 10/3

Aghoria Baba 10/3

While at the Cantonment Care Center  Anne and the others were teaching English, R and I were walking the property discussing his future plans. On thing he really wants to do for the children is to have a grassy area for them to play.  He feels very strongly about the children having a safe place to be a kid and play. The center is a gated property. In through the gate came a man. Immediately R tells me to rejoin the rest of the group and calls for his fellow male workers.  The men grab sticks or poles and join R and block the progress of this very strange man. R is trying to get the man to leave but he refuses. He is quite frighting to look at... Wild hair and beard, Ashe covering his face  very dirty wraps, but his eyes are the worst of all, rimmed in black coal and demonic. The evil emanating from him was palpable. He became aggressive with the men and hit one of them.

This man is known as an Aghoria Baba, they are considered a type of priest. He apparently want to sell us his blessing. R told us that the followers of this particular belief system in India are known for hypnotizing people and stealing from them. They are also known for their practice of cannibalism and having sexual relations with the dead.   They are also often intoxicated on some
Truly a scary individual and obviously possessed. There was no light in him at all. ( Matthew 6:23)

We, in America take spiritual war fare very lightly. Let us assure you it is a very real and present threat to us all. We need to be strong in the Lord and learnt pray against & to use God's armor to protect ourselves. Eph 6:10-18

Contonement Care center 10/3

We are now working with R & L the remaineder of our time here.  We spent a great deal of time playing with this new group of children.  This group has a mix of girls and boys and all the children have parents (either 1 or both) even though they live at or aroung this rail center.

We were able to speak with R about his ministry at length.  There are 8 of about 30 children that they are sponsoring for school.  The children that are in school and receiving education are the 1st generation in their families to be educated.  They are in a private school, simply because the public schools are worthless.  It cost 10 - 45$ to send the child to school.  The parents have to contribute 30%, this keeps them invested in their childs education.

R also works with the parents on parenting skills and educates them on how to keep their children safe from the pretators.  Because there is a high percentage of girls, trafficing is a real danger.

The parents work and so do the children after school and often before.  Some of their fathers are rickshaw drivers.  The moms and kids will sell socks, handkercheifs and used and refilled water bottles on the trains that come in.  It is illegal and if caught theycould face serious abuse or charges from the police.  A typical days pay may include collecting 36 bottles for the recycleing program they have here.  36 bottles = 1 kilo, if turned in at the recycling station they will get 25rupees, if refilled and resold they can get 10rs per bottle.  So the temptation to refill and glue the cap on to make it appear new is great.  They can also scavange the garbage piles for cardboard &  aluminum to sell to the recyclers.  They also scavange the garbage for food.

What a work God has called these people to.. Pray for them.

Until Later....

Worship 10/2

We have the privellege of worshiping with 2 groups today.  One group is internationals and the other is a local pastor and his church.

Robert & Dianne went to be with A and Robert spoke.  This group is a small house church with about 50 - 60 attenders.  A is from India and has suffered much for the cause of Christ.  He has been taken from his home and beaten and left on the road.  He has been harrased for many years, yet he is determined to continue with the work he has been called to no matter the cost!  Makes me ask my self what I would do, if faced with such opposition.  Dianne said she was blessed to be worshiping with other believers even though she could not understand a word that was said, it was all said to the same mighty God. She was also humbled and blessed to be asked to pray for the women of the group.

Dale, Julia, Alex and I went to the international worship with R & L.  It was precious to be with the workers that God has called to this city.   As we were speaking with one of the ladies, she told me what a blessing and encouragement it is when they have visitors from their home country.

We are treated as the honored guests when in actuallity it is us who are honored to be among them!

Last Day at MS center 10/1

Had a great last morning with the boys at the MS center.  We played hard... all the kids love the frisbees but especially the very young boys.  All the boys wanted to know if we were coming back the next day.  Michelle had made a very close connection with Bowan.  She taught him "I love you" in english during the week.  When he asked her if she was coming back tomorrow, it broke her heart to tell him no.. he looked at her with his sweet childs face and told her "I love you" in english.

We taught on the Holy Spirit and the Trinity.  No small feat to teach about Him, we wanted to be very careful that it would not sound like any other of their 360 million gods.  God is good all the time and He poured out his Holy Spirit on not just todays teaching but the entire week. All praise, honor and glory are His.  We are thankful to have been His vessels this past week.

Tomorrow is Sunday and we will divide up and go to 2 different services.  We are excited to worship with these people.

Until later...

Life on the Rails and in the Slums 9/30

During our time here we have found that one of the older boys is now employed and has a 1 room flat he shares with some of the other boys.  Many of the younger boys have day labor work but still live on the tracks and around the station.  P has told us that they will often be hired on by hotels in the south of India during the tourist season.  They will make money, but do not hold on to it long, they do not have good money handleing skills yet.  As they are learning life skills at the center, one of the things they have asked P to to help with is a banking system.  They boys entrust their money to one of P's associates and he holds the money for them. Please understand that this is a great step of trust they have taken. When they need money they as R for what they need and he gives it to them.  Amazing step for these boys.

Life is hard here.  Michelle fixed an amazing 1st aid kit and we have been very thankful that she included so many items in it.  When the boys found out that we had a kit, they started to come with their complaints.. some minor wounds, scratches and blisters to serious infections.  One young man (@17 or 18yrs old) presented with a monkey bite that was mostly healed from the outside but it was obvious that there was infection under the skin and was cyst. However his main complaint was not his wrist but is heel.  His heal was raw and layers of skin were missing.  Through our interpreter we found out that his heal had been chewed on during the night by rats.  The young man was taken to a doctor later to receive a tetanus and rabies shot.

We have had a blessed time working with the children of both locations (MS and RN slum).  The Holy Spirit has been moving among these children.  At the pink house Julia was able to speak with a young girl that has already at the tender age of about 15 been sold in to marrage and recovered by P&G, kidnapped and rescued by P&G and abused by her mother and at the hands of men.  She still has healng that needs to take place but because of the work here she has a realationship with our Lord.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit she told Julia that she has been able to forgive her abusers and her mother  who played a part in her trials.

Seed were planted at the MS center on 9/29 when we taught about God being the one and only God.  One young man asked why he should worship any god.  You see, both his parents were killed and his brother abuses him and wants to take the land that was left to them for himself.  The Holy Spirit was present and moving.  A couple of our team were able to speak with him 1 on 1 through interpreters and he made a profession of faith.

After someone makes a profession of faith comes the hard work of discipleship.  Please pray for these children that they would recognize the truth of what they are taught by these precious workers here.  Please pray for a radical movemnet of the Holy Spirit in this country.

Until later.....

Old Friends and New Friends

Old Friends and New friends... 9/26 -9/29

We have spent 3 days at the Tuition center aka the pink house. It is so cool to see many of the same children, only now they are 2 years older. Our group is much smaller this year than in '09 due to the monsoons. Many of the families are away from the city due to the recent flooding, they went to the country side or other parts of the city.  Some of the families that live in the RN slum area have homes in the surrounding villages where they farm. That they choose to come to the city and live in this slum area is incomprehensible to us but speaks volumes about their desire to earn money.  There are however families that Tia is the only life they have known for generations.

The children that are in the program at the Tuition center go to "public" school then come to the tuition center after school. The TC is not free, the parents have to pay a small fee for the children to attend. At the center they receive tutoring in all school subjects as well as english, vocational training when appropriate. They also receive mentoring from adults that are God centered. Those who operate the tuition center fee it is important for the parents to pay a small fee, then they have a vested interest in making sure the children come and it also gives the workers valuable contact and influence in the parents life. The other reason for the fee is it does not create dependency on hand outs.  If there are troubles often the parents contact the workers for help.

The children are precious and work their way into you heart very quickly.

We have also spent 2 days with the MS rail boys. The first day we went it rained again.  Thankfully where they hold the care center is an old church. The workers here have an agreement with the church board to use the facilities. Many of the same boys are here that we worked with in '09, Bowen, Rahul, Sunny...  It was also heart breaking to hear the sad news of who has died since our last visit, one right before our arrival due to drug overdose. Robert and I also noticed hardened face of a few boys and were told they were now involved in crime ect.. Thankfully the workers do not give up on them!  They continue to work with them and speak truth into their lives.

One amazing story is Sunny's!  Last time we were here he was heavy into huffing the whiteout solution that is the drug of choice among the Railkids. He was arrested several months ago and had a Damascus road experience while in jail. He has made a profession of faith and the workers here are challenging him and mentoring him in his new faith.

Bright spot in a dark city!

Please continue to pray for us.

Until later....

Monsoons and Sunshine

Our Father is so cool. He loves to teach us that our best laid plans are always subject to His will. And his plans are so much better than ours.

We arrived in Sunrise City to find the monsoon season still lingering. There has been alot of flooding. The trip from the airport was as always an adventure and gave the team a taste of the amazing driving skills of our hosts!

This area has been in a sever drought for about 4 years. The rain is welcome but does create some serous challenges for those here. The luxuries we often take for granted such as power, Internet and dry homes are not a reality here for many. Yesterday we were to spend time with our friends in our Fathers house. But the roads were thigh deep in water. So we as a team spoke with our Father in one of our rooms. It was a special time together. PG called analewife if we would like to help R distribute food to the family's in the RN slum area. It was very eye opening for the team to see how these people are effected by the weather. Their homes are almost waist deep in water yet they hold their claim to the spot along the road they call home. I think the processing of what they experienced yesterday will continue for sometime to come.

Today we woke to sunshine and much dryer streets. Hopefully we will be woken with the Rn children today as planned. We may have to do it in another location as the streets to the pink house were impassible last night. Perhaps today with the sun it will be better.

Thank you for remembering us tomour Father. Please speak to Hom about the people here and their need for him .

Until later...

We've Arrived!

The team has arrived safe and sound with ALL the luggage!
Thanks for everyone's prayers.

Opportunities

We have the opportunity to share the love of our Father every moment of every day. It doesn't matter where or what we are doing, it can take the form of a genuine smileand a friendly hello or a Father honoring response to a difficult situation/person. Our opprotunity may be in the form of non verbal communication or spoken boldly.
Keep in mind that we as brothers and sisters of Him are watched closely to see if the way we live our lives agrees with what we profess to believe.

He has given us the Counselor, His presence & power in us and through this power we can live a life that bears evidence & witness to our true love for Him

16 Days and Counting!

Praises and blessings... our passports came back today with the required visas! A full week sooner than we were expecting.  Our children's program is coming together nicely,  the children's director is generously helping us with props and supplies we will need for the 5 days of b'ble teaching that is planned.  We also have a 5 day English as a Foreign language program that we will be teaching.

Please continue to remember us to our Father as we finalize the details, especially that all we do would honor Him.  We know that He has gone before us and paved the way.

Until later....

The Journey Continues

It is amazing that He want to use us in ways that have eternal impact!  How can we not be humbled by this and thankful for that privilege.

I count it a privilege to be returning to Sunrise City.  I was last there in 2009 and that experience has never left me.  It changed the way I view so many things.  My heart was broken for those who do not know my Father... our Father.  My friend Heather that traveled with me in '09 shared a song that speaks volumes "I saw what I saw" by Sara Groves.

I am growing to love the people our Father has brought together and the unique talents each possess. We have sewers, mathematicians, counselors, english teachers, music & activity planners, safety coordinator and the gifts continue.  Most importantly we all have a heart for children and a desire to see them have a life long relationship with our Father.

To all of you who will be our "rope holders" while we are gone please continue to remember us to our Father whenever you think of us.  We seek to bring honor to His name in all our words, actions and deeds.  We desire to be a special blessing to the workers in Sunrise City, they have a very difficult job.  Please remember us to our Father for His provision of the team, that our focus would be kept on Him and finally peace of mind  and protection for our families that will be staying here.

23 Days & Counting!

Until later...
